Accessibility

Spherical maintains this archive of the Worldviews Network (2011 to 2014) on behalf of the network's partners. We want everyone to be able to use it, including people who use a screen reader, a keyboard, magnification, high-contrast settings or a phone.

The standard we work to

The site aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 (opens in a new tab) at level AA. It partly meets that standard: the pages themselves do, as far as our checks show, but some of the archive's older files and the videos hosted by other services do not. The exceptions are listed below.

What you can expect

  • Every page works with a keyboard alone. A "Skip to content" link comes first, every control shows where the focus is, and the fixed header never covers it.
  • Images have text descriptions, including the frames on each storyboard page. Decorative images are hidden from screen readers.
  • Text and controls meet the AA contrast ratios, also over photographs. The site keeps working in Windows high-contrast mode and with wider letter, word and line spacing.
  • Pages reflow to a 320-pixel-wide screen without sideways scrolling.
  • The home page slideshow has a Pause button. It holds still while the pointer or the keyboard focus is on it, and does not move at all if your device asks for reduced motion.
  • Links that open a new tab say so, and links to files say what kind of file they open (and, for files on this site, how large they are).
  • Videos do not load anything from YouTube or Vimeo until you choose to play them.

Known limitations

  • Videos. The videos are hosted on YouTube and Vimeo, and most were made by other organisations. Captions and audio description depend on those services and on the videos' owners, and some videos have no captions.
  • PDFs. Four of our PDFs had no accessibility tags: the Dimensions article, the two posters and version 2 of the logic model. Each now has a web version, linked beside it. The other PDFs are tagged, but we have not checked the quality of their tags. All of them now carry a title and a language.
  • A journal article. "Bioregional Community Dialogue" (Journal of Museum Education, 2016) is linked at its publisher, which provides its own accessible version. We do not have permission to republish it, so this site gives a summary.
  • Program kit files. The program kits include files in formats from 2011 to 2014, such as Uniview installers (Windows software), Google Earth files and Word documents. We have not made these accessible, and some need software that is no longer sold.
  • Maps and charts in the storyboards. Each frame has a short description. Detailed maps and charts are summarised in those descriptions, not given as data.
  • Links to other sites. Many links date from the years of the project. Some of those sites have changed or gone, and we cannot vouch for their accessibility.

How we check

Before any change goes live, automated tests check every page at desktop and phone widths with axe-core against WCAG 2.2 AA. Further tests check keyboard use and focus, contrast over photographs, text spacing and high-contrast mode, and that each page has its own title. The site has not yet been tested by screen-reader users; we plan to do that and will update this page.

Tell us about a problem

If something on this site is hard to use, or you need a page or file in another format, email worldviews.uyfel@passmail.net. Please include the address of the page and what went wrong. We read every message.
